A unique initiative, promoted by Devon County Council in collaboration with Visit Devon has formulated a plan of asking for small contributions from visitors and tourists for conserving the natural environment in the county. This initiative will be one of the many discussed on 23rd June during the Devon Green Tourism Business event.
This unique ‘Visitor Payback Scheme’ gives a chance for tourists to help improve the Devon landscape that they love, with a little extra payment. However, most businesses can join the volunteer program and study proved that most visitors welcome an opportunity to contribute to the environment.
Currently, Devon is leads counties in sustainable tourism that has given an impetus to the local economy. With over 165 accredited members in Green Tourism Business Scheme in Devon, this network was founded after members’ feedback. It has been introduced to promote and strengthen the tourism industry.
Apart from the member newsletter and available material online, there will be regular meetings all through the year enhancing eco-friendly green businesses a chance for new ideas, know more about the best practices and support the new enterprises. On 23

According to Liz Hodges, the business owner of Route2Cafe & Bar and Globe Hotel in Topsham says, “Devon is a leader in sustainable tourism and I am looking forward to the start of the new network. I personally think that it is will a boost to the business and green tourism on the whole. I am actually looking forward to sharing notes and meeting similar business owners who are looking to strengthen eco-friendly or green credentials for getting involved.”
The organiser of the Network, Rosie Bates also the Economic Development Manager at Devon County Council said “For Devon, tourism is very important and millions of visitors come here annually due to the scenic surroundings and amazing environs. Thus, it is imperative for the tourism business to adapt accordingly, ensuring sustainable business models and activities; while ensuring that the increasing ‘green facilities’ demands by customers are met.
Additionally, apart from the launch of the Visitor Payback Scheme, with a theme of “Finding the Right Supplier for your Business” has been chosen for the first event. With an interesting array of speakers, presentation of case studies by local businesses and a representative of Global Action Plan talks on sustainable purchasing.
